I know a lot of people are going to the divisional event this weekend. Any one going to Rantoul? Russ is setting up the course so it might favor higher hp cars.

Actually, just three :D Steve Wright has registered his GTO to

Guys,
I just dropped the trailer off at Rantoul and there are big problems

There is a tractor with big plow, a trailer and some other farm equipment in the way of our course!

If that isn't moved, there may not be a good course to run on Saturday at least. Hopefully they'll get it moved and it will nothing to worry about.

Good luck, Russ is the event chairman so it should be fast! :)

I figure it we leave @ 5 we will be there by 7...since I'll have to get gas when we get to Joliet. That gives us an hour for tech and to get ready for drivers meeting. Gates open at 6.30. 5 is early enough isn't it? If Chris wants to meet up that is cool....he can even ride up w/me if he wants. Lets plan on leaving my house at 5a.

Joe, would you send me a PM with your phone number and directions on getting to your place. I think I remember the way there but old age is creeping up on me. 5am at your place is fine by me. Thanks for the offer of a ride, but I will be bringing my car since I will be carrying some supplies for Marty and TJ.

I know it rained on you guys... but able to salvage a good time from the event?

Rain can make a great learning tool... and think of it this way: atleast your novice event is out of the way so you might be able to ditch the instructor next time. :D

What instructor? We were supposed to have an instructor lead us around the first session for a follow-the-leader, but they sent the first 5 cars out without one, so we were on our own. Didn't see any instructors riding along with novies all day. They had a total of like 4-5 instructors for the whole event, and they were either driving their own cars, or standing around watching us run.

That is sad. I think every event needs instructor ride alongs for newbies.

That's too bad. I just replied to Mark F. (using the same e-mail where I asked if he needed instructors but he said they were covered...) asking him how many they usually have so I can make the recommendation next year on being newbie friendly or not. Next years local HPDE list might list them as intermediate and above. Even AMS does a better job with instruction these days, doh!

Instructors, we were supposed to have instructors? We were informed of that in the driver's meeting but evidently they didn't want to get wet. As Marty said, we went out on the follow-the-leader first session and we ended up following a guy in a red Camaro. We assumed he was the instructor or had one with him... nope. It was raining, we are unfamiliar with the track, and it was our first track day... we don't need no stinking instructors. Geeeesh!

I had a good time trying not to put Marty's Camaro in to the armco, like at least 4 other people did. I'm beginning to think racing in the rain is like a blind person reading braille--it doesn't matter that you can SEE the track, it's all the other senses that actually get you around a lap.

We aren't a "Driving School" but rather a lapping
organization so the instructors we have a strictly to

I thought the event was fun. I thought there were a couple areas for improvement but overall a decent event given the uncooperative weather.
1st in the drivers meeting they gave away some good prizes but I didnt have my neckwear so I didn't win any.
2nd in the drivers meeting he confused people on passing...especially for newb's. Bad idea.
3rd instructors should have been standing in line looking for cars that needed an instructor during the 1st red group. Standing there asking is much better than drivers asking...

Overall I think it was a good event. The water made things very interesting in some corners. I would have thought that drainage would have been higher on the list during track design but I guess not. There were multiple areas w/3-4" of water and areas on straights with 1-2" easily. It was craziness, fun though. Really made you be smooth and follow the line, just couldn't use the edges of the track.

Anyone want to change the title of this thread?

Yes and no. We were running the Hankook race tires because they weren't any worse (tread-depth-wise) than the street tires. There was standing water on the track most of the day which made accelerating (for us) on the straights a handful. The corners turned into short praying sessions but most of the brake zones were decent. After the first guy stuck his Volkswagen R32 into the barrier (he was able to continue with significant right front body damage) all I could picture was me putting the Camaro into the same spot. The guy drifting his G35 through the corners right behind, and right in front of us, got what he deserved however. The armco must love idiots.

Which corner(s) did they have impact?

Atleast you guys got to learn the track a little bit so next time it will be more familiar.

I had fun despite the rain and scary driving conditions. Here's a couple slow and slippery laps in the Elise. I got a kick out of Joe's response to seeing the is video - "You didn't apex that corner very close."

Which corner(s) did they have impact?

The R32 and the Infiniti went off in front of the (I believe) North Tower--not sure of the corner number without looking at the map. It's where the deepest water was running across the track. Near the beginning of Matt's video where the water is just spraying off his front tires both cars went off on the right.

What? Did you watch the video??? The only time I take my hands off are to shift - and once to turn the traction control on in the first lap.

you take a really long time to shift then!

Let me watch it again. I swear you went down some straight aways with one-hand on the wheel. I'll quote some times. :)

Hornswoggler

Your downshifts are nice and quick, but your hand leaves the wheel for about 4-7 seconds for upshifts... thats a long time!

I quote 1:23 to 1:17 as my example.

Sheesh. Are you bored today or something?

Yeah - I took a "long time" to shift that one time. It was VERY wet (like an inch of water on the DRYER parts of the track). Quick upshifts would spell disaster in the standing water in my car. Maybe I just don't have the talent for driving in the rain that you have Collin. :D

What other excuses should I use to prostrate myself for the video being an example of not being my best work behind the wheel? My wife will tell you that *on occasion* I'm not perfect. Maybe she's right if my own friends are seeing it....

I just posted it as a reference for conditions.

I'll retract my statement. From a glance it looked like you were driving one-handed down the straights, right-hand waiting on lever until time to shift, didn't factor in the conditions.
