What is the real difference between the red and yelow Mothers Power Ball? I know that the yellow one is a bit larger and that it is specifically made for paint (per the advertising and labeling), but wasn't the red one (metal and trim uses now) was advertised for all surface when it first came out i thought? Would it HARM paint if used to wax? i just wonder because i saw it was about half the price in some stores than the yellow one now and was just pondering the real differences between the compounds they are made of and the previous uses of the red one before the sudden production of the yellow "for paint" model...is it just a ploy to have people buy two of these or should the red never been used for paint in the first place? Discuss...

Depends if you've used the red one for metal before or not.
If not, and it's brand new, you should be fine.
However, feel both of them. The softer it is, the softer it's going to be on your paint.

OK, they both come in plastic cases so i can not feel unless i buy...trying to avoid that best i can, wish i could feel them both to test them out.
I guess my question is, has anyone ever used these to detail with good or bad results or is everyone a baller with thier own osilating (sp) polisher? I have always hand rubbed my waxes and polishes but if these are ok for the paint 15-20 bucks for a red one might be a good idea for when i need to speed the process up a bit.

With some practice, patience, and a deft hand, you can buff a whole car using a rotary buffer.
Ask Digitalseance and Kapoosh1. I did both of their cars with a Makita rotary buffer, with several foam pads, lots of compounds, and multiple coats of waxes. Digitalseance's car even included debadging.
It takes time to learn how to do it. But once someone shows you how to do it the right way, you'll never forget it.

Well....I broke down and bought one. Turns out one is just a little bigger then the other. I got a red power ball for dirt cheap and tried it out on the lower rear bumper. It worked pretty well. no swirls, no scratches, all was well. so i contnued and it turned out great. super quick and great results. WIsh i had a buffer still, but i would recomend the ower ball for paint of trim, seems to be the saem stuff...
