So why an Evo? Why not something else? Just curious...
Well i drove everything (evo, sti, wrx, E46 M3,350Z, E90 330I) First I decided to pick one from the sti, evo, wrx. For me, the evo just seemed the most fun in stock form. Plus the ix's seem to respond to bolt ons really well. 350Z i took out because of the 2seater aspect. WRX just didnt have the power i wanted. The 330 i really liked, but in the end couldnt justify the money for the performance. And the M3's i could afford just seemed too old....
I originally had decided on a 2006 330i. Even got the funds together and drove to chicago to pick it up. We were a little off in price, so i decided to look around a little more and see if i could get more car for my money. On my way home, i stopped to see this evo (private seller). Basically perfect condition, <4K miles on it.....to make a long story, I just couldnt leave without it :D

Well i bought in chicago, drove it home. Once i got home i drove around non stop for a few days. Then drove to St. Louis to see some friends....then drove to chicago again for my exhaust. The rest of the miles are from just ripping around locally!
I'm not getting a EVO now everyone has one 03-04 it is, when the hell did you make it back to hillbilly hell?

if you don't buy an EVO because "everyone has one" you might be the dumbest SOB on the planet. it is a great car no matter how many people have one. that is like saying you don't want a Z06 because it is a penis enlarger for middle aged white business men.... who gives a damn, it is an amazing machine.
afrin... car looks great. i am kicking myself for not spending the extra money and buying and evo. i drove my buddies MR and it is very nice. welcome to the bliss of DSM ownership :)

I can buy a 01 Z06 for around the same price as a used EVo and a 03-04 Cobra for the same price as used EVO and both have cheaper insurance. Cobra is still my dream car that I can afford.

Speaking of the bliss of DSM Ownership, I was having a little fun today with my Evo and the intercooler pipe blew off at around 6000. I get out, and find that the clamp had fallen off completely and is nowhere to be found. So I hobble over to Advanced and buy a new clamp. Screw it on nice and tight, drive off and play one more time - the clamp blows off AGAIN! Luckily it didnt fall off this time, but it was still really fucking annoying.

Was it the uicp at the intake manifold? Mine had problems with that one popping off every once in a while. I fixed it with a little hair spray along the inner lining where it seals around the intake manifold and put the clamp back on and suprisingly it has stayed on ever since.

yeah more or less it is. Vtec itself isn't bad sadly a lot of hondas are. I enjoy the power when it comes on but for daily driving I thought it would be to hard to use.

Mitsu here in town is really cool about mods. I took mine there to have a new 02 sensor installed under warranty and the Evo Tech was like, so you have a WORKS flash eh? How do you like it?
He also told me that as long as you arent doing stupid shit he usually doenst stick it to you for warranty work. He was perfectly fine with me installing an 02 housing and downpiipe in addition to my cat-back section

Most places don't care about mods after the turbo, it's prior to the turbo that can get you screwed; such as an up-pipe. Subaru won't void your warranty if you get a SPT intake but any other brand they will (that's what I was told anyway). The guy at Sud's in B/N isn't exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer...

maybe not compared to a big turbo 300ZX, but drive a say.....300hp camaro then that and you go WTF wheres the power then BAM you hit 4k and take off

its all relative to what you are used to... but I can percieve some lag in the EVO.
haunter
04-20-2007, 06:31 PM
I don't realyl see it as relative, you hit the gas below 4k RPMS and you have to wait for it to spool, its a measurable amount of time if you are below 3k.
that would be lag :p

Turbo Lag, Evo, Stock Turbo......You're kidding right?
my thoughts exactly. i drove an MR last week and the lag was very minimal. you need to drive a turbo car differently than say a 300hp camaro or god forbid your honda civic. if you want the boost to be instant you need to be above 4k. we don't have the same torque curve as a SBC for obvious reasons so you don't have 400 ft lbs or torque at 2k rpm's. or you can run tiny turbos that run out of air above 5k rpm if you want instant boost. if you think a stock evo has lag issues you need to drive one and keep the revs up.
now the the lag on a WRX... that is awful. it takes longer to spool the 13g in the subaru than it did to spool a big16 on the DSM.
yes t-bolt clamps are the way to go if yours are blowing off... you can order them from fasten-all.
after my discussion with haunter on AIM i must clarify. ALL TURBOS HAVE LAG so yes evo's have turbo lag. but it isn't enough to complain about a "laggy turbo." that is just part of driving a turbo car... driving it to reduce the lag IE shifting quickly and shifting at the proper parts of the power band. you may say "my turbo probe has full boost by 1700prms." ok good for you, you can spool a tiny turbo to 10psi very quickly and then the turbo is dead at 4k rpms. or in the case of the EVO you have full boost at ~3000-3500 and then have power untill 7500, which would you rather have?
again ALL TURBOS HAVE LAG! but it is a necessary evil if you want the benefits of a turbo.

EVO's have lag. You're not going to get that kind of HP out of two liters without some lag.
EVO's also drop off pretty bad up top if you're on the stock cams.
All these negatives and it is still an awesome engine. Weird. :)

This is why you need the AMS or BR UICP and mini battery! I had the same problem. I even had my piping blow off during an autox run. That was embarassing.

Stock Evo turbo kicks in around 3200-3500 for full boost level - which should be somewhere between 18 and 20 psi. Power's usually done by 7K, however I'm not familiar with the IX.
As far as the blown-off clamps are concerned, a T-bolt clamp is not necessarily required. There are better quality clamps. I have a couple if you need one in a pinch. However, a GREAT Evo parts & info vendor site is RRE and they carry hoses and clamps: http://www.roadraceengineering.com/hoseandclamps.htm
They're great people!
I never really had clamp problems - guess I've been lucky. But I wanted to be able to take more boost thru the IC, etc. so have bellied up for the parts.

I have noticed the wom gear ones work better on the silicone at high boost versus rubber hose. where t-bolts are best. Jim can prob say more he had lots of problems with hose clamps.

That's where left foot braking come into play. If you can learn to use your left foot while keeping your right planted in second gear during an auto-x run, you'll stay at full boost (or darn near it).
How's the fuel pickup on these cars? My subaru requires over an 1/8 of a tank to make an auto-x run w/o cutting out. I ask b/c when you're the underdog in your class, you try to shave weight anyway you can!;)
