i've been a big proponent of the "gps is for retards" theory for a long time.

however i borrowed a garmin nav unit from my in-laws for a trip to chicago where i knew i'd be driving from location to location in unknown areas over the weekend and i must say - the thing is awesome!

i gots ta get me one of these!

I have one you can borrow it. It is the best investment besides the blackberry.

trust in garmin. she will never lead you astray! (except for the occasional pointless drive down a gravel road, regardless of whether or not you have 'gravel roads' turned off)

This is one of the reasons I don't have front bumper. Or did have a front bumper./

seriously! wtf.

my nuvi200w sent me through some park down by effingham with dirt/gravel roads and WOOD bridges!

other than that it has been great.

I just use VZNavigator.. it comes with the $120/mo wireless bill that I have..

I remember using M$ 'Streets & Trips' back in 99! I think I still have it on CD somewheres..

I also have two Garmin units if I so choose to use them...

My dad has a Tom Tom we use. It's pretty awesome. I used it out to Ca and back and we've used it every time we've gone to one of my races. However they are lacking in their database of locations and race tracks seem to not exist to them.

Has anyone used both or heard which one is better between the Garmin and Tom Tom? I've only used the Tom Tom.

with work I found that my Garmin Nuvi 255W isn't the best I could have, so I ended up picking up a Delorme Street Atlas and Earthmate for just 69 dollars! You have to have a laptop with you but its well worth it if you do multiple stops.

back from the dead

Garmin sells 26 models of auto GPS units. What the heck?

I am looking for a GPS that has an easy to see display in a convertible. Are any better that others or are they pretty much all the same? I don't care about MP3, photo sharing, or any of that crap. I would prefer to get a cheaper model (in case it is stolen with the top down) but I will spend more if the displays are worth the money. Any recommendations?

yea, it takes all the guess work out. I really like not having to hunt for the exit and the estimated time of arrival is very nice.

I have a lower model 200w by the way.

We've got the Garmin 2610 (4 years old I think). We bought it for a tip out East to help our son move back here. My wife gets motion sickness when reading maps or books so it really helped with the trip. Since then I have updated the maps once and need to do it again.

The 2610 allows us to plan our trips on my computer and download the routes to the GPS. Many of the newer/cheaper ones don't have this ability and I wouldn't think of owning one without it. We do a lot of driving and it helps to plan out the entire trip and break it up into various legs.

When our daughter was stationed in Europe we bought her a Garmin that has both the US and European maps. We also bought my parents one and it has really helped them out. My mother is a realtor and it helps her in her business. We are going to get our son one as he is traveling a lot more.

You will pay for the features you want so I would recommend you do some research to see what is available and what you need before you just go out and buy one. I spent about 2 months researching various GPS's before settling on the 2610.

I love the 680T we got. No more rustling around with piles of google maps.

its so thoughtless now that I forget sometimes to even look at the route on bing or google before leaving. It was KING besides being slow to uplink in downtown chicago where everything is uber crazy to get around

I've got the Tom Tom 125 unit and its been great!

My friend and I were driving to a meet near Chicago and we brought both GPS's (he had a higher end Garmin) and it was surprising to see how much our GPS directions varied even though they were set on the same settings, i.e fastest route, etc.

His GPS seemed to want to turn off on quite a few roads while my Tom Tom told us to continue. We used my TomTom and it was a direct route without any turns whereas his kept on wanting us to turn.

In all, never had any problems w/ the TomTom, great in the sun, love the auto switch to night mode, and the display is set up PERFECTLY with all the information you REALLY use.

I have GPS on my Blackberry. Works better than the Garmin unit that my friends had in their car last weekend while we were in the the 'burbs of Chicago. But, it also was slower to refresh its map when we were downtown. I know my way around the City, like what streets intersect where, but certain points of interest (read: touristy shit that I never went to while living there) I needed it for.

my garmin is a previous gen unit, and the brand new ones are even faster at everything

Another thing to note is the refresh rate.

My TomTom is about every 2.5 seconds. When you have a lot of turns/exits/side streets coming up and you know you need to turn soon sometimes it will you right before. Keep it in mind :)
